Parenting Time Calculator

This worksheet can help you figure the average time a child spends with each parent based on a parenting time agreement. You may use the result to fill in the parenting time section of the child support calculation.

In order to include parenting time in the child support guidelines calculation, there must be a written parenting time agreement or court order providing for parenting time (OAR 137 050 0730).

Parenting time is typically based on the number of overnights the child spends with the parent. Since parenting time is calculated based on 365 (or 366) days in a year, practitioners may calculate the number of days spent with the parent for known periods of time. For example, "The child will spend Memorial Day weekend with the Mother," may be counted as 3 overnights.)

Unknown or nonspecific periods of time may not be calculated. For example, "The child will spend time during the summer months with the Father" is an unquantifiable period of time and is not included in the calculation.

Because some Oregon counties base their parenting time agreements on a two year cycle (one odd year, one even year), this parenting time calculator program calculates parenting time for a two year period. The program then averages the parenting time for each parent.

When a holiday or vacation day overlaps any weekend parenting time, the calculator reflects the holiday or vacation time.

STEP 1: SELECT THE APPROPRIATE CHECK BOXES BELOW FOR 2010 AND 2011
“Parent A” is the parent with the most parenting time. The calculator starts by assuming the children spend 365 days per year with “Parent A”. Select the boxes in Step 1 to show when “Parent B” has parenting time. The calculator can automatically compute weekends, holidays, and spring break. You will add other events and make any needed corrections in Step 3.

STEP 2: POPULATE PARENTING TIME CALENDARS
Click on the “Populate Calendars” button to have the computer fill in the dates corresponding to the check boxes marked in Step 1.

STEP 3: MODIFY PARENTING TIME CALENDARS
Check or uncheck boxes as needed to arrive at the final, accurate number of parenting time overnights. As each check box is checked or unchecked, the “Scheduled Parenting Time” totals for each parent in 2010 and 2011 will be adjusted automatically.

STEP 4: COMPUTE AVERAGE PARENTING TIME
Click on the “Compute Average” button to have the computer use the modified parenting time calendars to average the 2010 and 2011 parenting time overnights and percentages. The result may be used to fill in the parenting time section of the child support calculation. Or, if you are calculating child support using the Oregon Online Child Support Calculator, enter the average parenting time for the parents when prompted to do so.

STEP 5: PRINT THIS PAGE
Click on the “Print” button to print the parenting time calculators and Average Parenting Time.
